In 2003, David Walker left the vibrant metropolitan city of Fort Lauderdale and relocated with his family to the quiet, rural city of Apalachicola to begin work in Franklin County.
David’s career began with applying his leadership skills as site director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Bend, first at Brown Elementary School in Eastpoint and later at Chapman Elementary in Apalachicola. After five years with the Boys and Girls Club, David transitioned to the Franklin County Health Department, where he served as operations manager for nine years. In 2019, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of George E. Weems Memorial Hospital, becoming the first African American to hold this position in Franklin County.
As CEO, Walker oversees more than 100 employees and manages a wide range of duties. In 2020, he was named Florida’s Top Rural Health Leader by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health. According to the organization, the 2020 Rural Health Community Star Recognition reflects Walker’s and Weems’ commitment to providing quality healthcare in a rural setting, particularly during the nationwide COVID-19 health crisis.
A man of action and conviction, David Walker has lived in Apalachicola for two decades and is deeply dedicated to its people and his work. He also serves as Senior Pastor of Covenant Word Christian Center. Married to Harolyn Walker, they have five children: David Walker II, Latoya Walker, Bria Walker, Brandon Walker, and Beyla Walker. He is a proud graduate of Bethune-Cookman University and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
