Community

Hello Community,

“Community” is so easy to say. The word itself connects us with each other. It describes an experience so common that we never really take time to explain it. It seems so simple, so natural, and so human. Community is a gift, and one that humans cannot refuse. But the meaning of community is complex. I am a member and a part of many different communities. Some of the communities I belong to intersect, and some don’t. I am a part of the dance education community, dance performance community, choreographer community, non-profit arts and education community, teaching community, dance activism community, community building community, fashion community, fashion design community, fashion merchandising community, Instagram community, and the Facebook community. I can’t leave out my blood family communities in the South Bronx, Harlem, Gretna, La, Apalachicola, FL, Philadelphia, Pa just to name a few.

What I am coming to know and realize is that community is not a place, a building, or an organization; nor is it an exchange of information over the Internet. Community is both a feeling and a set of relationships among people. People form and maintain communities to meet common needs.

Welcome to Moving Education Institute, Inc. We are a community using the arts to connect with people in communities that are nested within each other that have schools, faith-based organizations, community centers, social clubs and social groups that are organized in different ways.

I’m learning that the meaning of community requires more thoughtfulness and deliberation than I and we typically give it.

Please join Moving Education Institute, Inc. as we set forth on a journey to engage with communities using the arts to support meaningful play and conversations generated through arts and culture, theater, dance, and photography.

I invite you to be a part of MEI where people and their gifts connect to create what they cannot create alone.
